Dec 23, 2009 - 18weeks and 3days into our first pregnancy.
A pregnancy, a baby, we had wanted so long - all our lives.
And we are told, two days before Christmas that there is nothing that can be done to save this pregnancy, this baby; it is not going to continue. He is not going to live...

Shawn's Story Continued...

One week earlier, after a normal day and a pregnancy which had been going exceptionally well, I went to bed. As usual. Like normal.

Around 11pm, I awoke to go to the washroom, (one of the many joys of pregnancy) and suddenly I felt a gush of water. Unsure what it was, we took the side of caution and went to emerg where they confirmed that I was leaking fluid but to go home and stay off my feet. Days later, because things didnt seem to be improving and I continued to leak 'water' , I decided in the best interest of our baby to go back to emerg where they then ordered an emergency ultrasound and determined, on December 23rd that there was not enough fluid for the baby's lungs to develop; for him to move around and his limbs 'learn' to work properly; for his digestive track to develop properly; his kidneys to develop properly; for him to live outside my womb. The umbilical cord would keep him alive until, without the fluid, he would roll on it and suffocate.

And that was it.

We were given the choice to induce labour and begin to move on or wait until he was born naturally and then begin to greive becuase the chances of my 'water' stopping or the leak repairing were very, very, very low.
After a second opinion confirmed what we knew in our hearts, Shawn Michael Gourlie was born on January 11, 2010, 3 1/2 weeks from when my water first broke. Alive. Perfect in everyway. Too small to survive, he died in his fathers arms.

This organization is meant to put a face to PPROM (Premature Preterm Rupture of Membranes), high risk pregnancy research and even more, put a face to the families that unfortunately struggle with the hardest loss any heart could ever have to bear. With their children that die unecessarily.

Though research has come very, very far, there is still quite a ways to go.

NO family should have to know the pain that we are going through and if our pain can help someone, anyone not have to feel that pain too, then loosing Shawn Michael would not have been in vain.

Gourlie Family Birth Announcement

The Gourlie family is pleased to announce the birth of their second child Lincoln J.N. Born in January 2011.

Many thanks to Dr Whittle and the staff at Mt Sinai Special Pregnancy Program, Group Support Members and the doctors that run it, the delivery ward and the post-partum floor for making the experience of our pregnancy after loss and birth so wonderful.
